An eye emergency can include anything from chemical exposure to an eye injury. Even if you follow all the necessary precautions, you can still experience an eye injury.

If your emergency happens outside of our regular office hours, please seek assistance from your nearest emergency room.

Common Eye Injuries

Common eye injuries include:

Physical trauma – In some cases, physical trauma can leave a black eye or cause swelling, eye pain or even bleeding. Place a cold compress over the affected area and call Dr. Webb or seek urgent medical care.
Chemical exposure – Chemical exposure can occur if your eye comes into contact with bleach, vinegar, battery acid, or other harmful substances. In this situation, wash your eyes out with cool clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek emergency care.
Corneal abrasions – Some of the most painful injuries are caused by scratches on the cornea. In these situations don’t rub, cover the area with a clean eye shield and Call Dr. Webb or seek urgent medical care.
Foreign objects in the eye – Dust, dirt, metal, wood or any particle can lodge itself in your eye, causing significant damage. Do not rub your eyes. Try blinking or flushing your eye out with cool clean water. If you find no relief, or your symptoms are becoming worse, call Dr. Webb or seek urgent medical care.

Eye Disease Emergencies

Many types of eye diseases can cause an eye emergency. Some of the most common include wet age-related macular degeneration and closed-angle glaucoma. In these situations, you may experience:

Hazy or blurry vision
Glare or halos around light sources
Eye pain
Sudden vision loss
Nausea and vomiting
Visual distortions
